Proper display case lighting is absolutely critical, especially when displaying luxury inventory, like jewelry. Lighting can dramatically affect the appearance of your product, particularly the coloring. When lighting display cases, you have three major options: LED, halogen, and fluorescent lighting. How can you choose between these three options? Let’s break down the pros and cons of each.

LED Lights

LED lights are both cost-effective and energy efficient. They tend to have long life spans and are available in an array of color temperatures and colors. Many LED lights can be low profile or dimmable, and they can often mimic familiar incandescent, neutral white, or cool blue light. This makes LED lights a versatile and flexible lighting solution for retail display cases.

PRO: Longer lifespan LED lights have an incredibly long lifespan and typically only need to be replaced every 35,000 hours.

CON: Potentially more expensive LED lights are more expensive than halogen and fluorescent lighting. It should be noted while the upfront costs of investing in LED lighting are high, because they last longer, your lighting costs in the long run may actually be lower.

Halogen Lights

Halogen lights are dimmable lights that emit clean, crisp light. However, they are less efficient than LED lights.

PRO: Excellent color rendering Because halogen lights emit clean, crisp light, they render colors excellently. That means that the color of inventory will appear accurate when the inventory is placed in display cases lit by halogen lights, which is especially important if your are selling jewelry. For example, light that is too yellow can affect the coloring of diamonds and can also cause a white gold band to appear rose gold.

CON: High levels of heat emission Halogen lights emit more heat than standard incandescent lighting. This can affect store temperature and drive up your climate control costs.

Fluorescent Lights

Fluorescent lights are less expensive than LED lights, though they tend to be less efficient.

PRO: Low levels of heat emission Fluorescent lights are cool to the touch. They produce quite a bit of light and consume a relatively low amount of energy.

CON: Shorter lifespan Fluorescent lights tend to lose the majority of their lumen power during the first hundred hours of their life. This means that they need to be replaced more frequently, which can drive up costs in the long run. With age, fluorescent lights also tend to flicker.

How to Choose? The kind of light that you choose for your retail display cases will ultimately depend on your unique needs and your inventory. However, it is important to note that you should stick to one kind of lighting throughout all of your display cases, as this helps to maintain consistency. You don’t want one of your display cases looking cool and another looking warm.
