Always direct customers to the right. Research shows that it is most advantageous to design your store in such a way that it directs customers to the right when they enter. This is because people tend to naturally look to the left first, and then to the right, which means they prefer to move toward the right and then move in a counterclockwise direction around the store.

Break up long aisles. Did you know that up to 20 percent of a store’s merchandise is skipped over by customers? Typically, when customers are skipping over merchandise, the culprit is long, uninterrupted aisles. This kind of organizational layout simply doesn’t engage consumers or get their attention, and your sales will suffer as a result. To improve organization, break your store up into smaller aisles.

Leverage the power of angles. While it might seem like common sense to arrange aisles parallel to a store’s exterior walls, this kind of arrangement doesn’t necessarily produce visual interest, which makes the shopping experience less engaging. Angles can work to produce more visual interest and subsequently drive sales. Aisles could angle in from both sides to a central aisle, forming an arrow layout that ends in a back-wall display, explained store design and display consultant Linda Cahan. But only take an angular approach if you can keep aisles wide enough for customers to navigate easily, she warned.

Put displays at the end of your aisles. Consumers want to feel like they are being led somewhere when they are in a retail store. The easiest way to do this? Put a visually compelling, interesting display at the end of your aisles to help facilitate a sense of destination.
